City to negotiate house sale

SWARTZ CREEK – The City of Swartz Creek is getting ready to seek bids for the sale of a renovated house on Don Shenk Drive.

Once empty and dilapidated, the house has undergone extensive renovations since the city purchased it in a tax foreclosure sale last year.

The city has invested about $125,000 in the project.

“We expect to get $130,000 to $150,000 for it,” said Mayor David Krueger. “It’s one of the nicest homes in the community.”

Mayor Pro Tem Dennis Pinkston added, “It’s gone from the worst house on that street to the best.”

City Manager Adam Zettel said home sales are picking up in the Swartz Creek area. A 982-square-foot house on Fairchild Street recently sold for $120,000. New listings in Winchester Village include a 1,036-square-foot home with a $139,999 asking price, and a 1,677-square-foot home with a $164,999 price tag.

The city cannot profit from the sale, so any funds over and above the amount the city has invested will go back to the Genesee County Land Bank. – L.R.

Metro board OKs city substation lease

SWARTZ CREEK – The Metro Police Authority board has approved a lease agreement with the City of Swartz Creek, which will keep the Metro satellite office open.

The Authority will pay the city $10,000 to maintain offices, interview rooms and office staff to handle walk-ins 24 hours per week at the Swartz Creek substation, located in the public safety building on Civic Drive.

In April, the authority board became concerned about whether the police services contract with the city and Mundy Township legally allowed the authority to enter into lease agreements.

Authority board Chairman Curt Porath said he has since consulted with the board attorney who advised that the lease does not violate the operating agreement between the two municipalities. – L.R.
