Homicide suspect arrested near Gaines

Aaron Michael Eby Aaron Michael Eby GAINES TOWNSHIP – The suspect in an April stabbing death in Tuscola County could face federal charges in connection with an ongoing investigation in Gaines Township.

Gaines Township police assisted Tuscola County Sheriff’s deputies, and agents from the FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in locating and arresting Aaron Michael Eby at a home just outside the western limits of the Village of Gaines.

Authorities also removed more than 40 guns from the home where Eby, 23, had stayed “off and on” with relatives, according to township police Chief Mark Schmitzer.

Schmitzer said federal agents continue to investigate Eby in connection with a complaint Gaines Township referred to them in February. He could provide no additional information about the federal investigation at this time.

Tuscola County investigators allege Eby stabbed his 33-year-old roommate, Neal James Ellis, at a home Eby owned in the 3200 block of Willard Road in Arbela Township.

Detectives following up on missing person report found Ellis’ remains on property Eby also owns in the 3700 block of Hanes Road in Vassar Township, according to reports.

Investigators believe Ellis died between April 24 and 27.

Eby remains jailed without bond on an open count of murder, 11 counts of possessing a dangerous weapon and four counts of providing false information to a peace officer.
