In brief

Don Shenk open house

SWARTZ CREEK – Anyone who is curious about the city-owned home on Don Shenk Drive can get a look inside during an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 12.

The city purchased the home at 5256 Don Shenk in a tax sale last year, paying around $24,000 for the abandoned and rundown property. The City Council budgeted about $80,000 for interior repairs, renovations and landscaping, and will sell the house this year.

City Manager Adam Zettel has said the investment eliminated a blight in the neighborhood. – L.R.

Firearms ordinance passed

GAINES TOWNSHIP – The township Board of Trustees has approved an ordinance prohibiting reckless discharge of firearms. Ordinance 138 mirrors a state law but carries penalties of 93 days in jail and $500 in fines.

“We’ve had three incidents lately; some of the people involved were residents, some were visitors,” said police Chief Mark Schmitzer. “In two cases, buildings were struck (by bullets). The third went across a field. They’re not using proper backstops.

“We’re not necessarily looking to cart someone off to jail. But we need to be able to ticket them, get them into court and stop this kind of behavior.” – L.R.

Road work costs approved

GAINES TOWNSHIP – The township Board of Trustees has approved about $160,604 worth of road resurfacing projects for 2018. They are:
