VFW to host John Nelson
SWARTZ CREEK — On May 7, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall will be hosting John Nelson in a seminar on veteran benefits.
Nelson was a Vietnam helicopter pilot and will be offering information on how to apply for benefits for veterans and their dependents.
Eric Johnson, the Commander of the Swartz Creek VFW, said Nelson would be covering VA, disability, and burial benefits among others.
According to Johnson, the paperwork can be intensive and difficult to complete. The purpose of the seminar is to help veterans apply for these benefits effectively, and avoid having their applications sent back.
The seminar will also show vets and dependents what they might not realize they are eligible for.
“Even if you’ve been denied benefits before, or your dependents have been denied benefits before, any inkling that you might qualify for some benefits, I would attend,” said Johnson.
He said sometimes the requirements and particulars of benefits change, so those who have been denied before may be eligible later on.
The workshop is open to the community. The VFW is located at 3131 South Elms Road, behind a military tank next to the street. The workshop is dated for May 7 and will take place at 6:30 p.m. No registration is necessary.
